MP Iqra Khalid’s Statement on Amendments to the “2018 Public Report on the Terrorism Threat to Canada – Building a Safe and Resilient Canada”

In December of last year, Public Safety Canada issued the “2018 Public Report on the Terrorism Threat to Canada – Building a Safe and Resilient Canada.” After reading the report I was very disappointed at the use of broad terminology which painted the entirety of our Muslim-Canadian and Sikh-Canadian communities in a very negative light. These concerns were shared by many Canadians and, as a result of consultations, the Honourable Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, directed Public Safety Canada to conduct a thorough review to make appropriate changes to the language throughout the report.

Since that time I have had many meetings with my Constituents and Stakeholders in Mississauga-Erin Mills about the report. Alongside many of my colleagues in Parliament, I continued to express those concerns to better inform Public Safety Canada’s review. In my statement of December 2018 I promised to share the results of that review with my Constituents and all my fellow Canadians.

Today I am pleased to see effective amendments to the language used in the report to ensure that it is inclusive and treats our Muslim-Canadian and Sikh-Canadian communities with respect. I am also pleased with the willingness of Public Safety Canada to not only understand and respect our concerns, but to work with diverse communities to do better. At a time when there are those who seek to divide us we must endeavour to better understand and build bridges with the diverse peoples of Canada.

Our Muslim-Canadian and Sikh-Canadian communities have made extensive contributions to the fabric of Canada today. As a Canadian Muslim myself, I am proud of the role Canada’s diverse communities have played to build this beautiful country. I strongly object to the use of any exclusionary and overbroad language that would undermine those contributions, or the contributions of any religious, ethnic, or cultural group. Thank you Minister Goodale for your diligence in resolving this issue.

Sincerely,

Iqra Khalid
