Additional funding to protect communities at-risk

There has been an alarming rise in hate incidents over the past few weeks motivated by Antisemitism and Islamophobia. I have heard countless stories from our residents about such incidents across the GTA and it is absolutely unacceptable. No matter your faith or background, everyone has the right to feel safe in their place of work, at school, and in our neighbourhoods.

In response to these incidents, the Government of Canada has committed an additional $5 million to fund enhanced security measures for communities at-risk of hate-motivated crimes. This funding is being delivered through the Expanded Securities Infrastructure Program and applications are now open.

Eligible Applicants can include:

  • Places of worship
  • Provincially/territorially recognized private educational institutions
  • Community centres
  • Gender-based violence shelters
  • (NEW) Publicly accessible community-based facilities such as daycares and offices

Eligible projects can include:

  • Physical security equipment such as cameras, barriers, and lighting
  • Minor renovations and supplementary equipment such as reinforced windows and doors, fire monitoring, alarm systems
  • Security planning, including emergency plans and assessments
  • Training for volunteers
  • (NEW) Security personnel hired on a time-limited basis

Applications are being accepted and assessed on a first-come first-served basis until March 31, 2024, or until funding is exhausted.

If your organization could use this funding, I encourage you to take a look and apply: https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/cntrng-crm/crm-prvntn/fndng-prgrms/scrt-nfrstrctr-prgrm/index.aspx

We are a community in Mississauga-Erin Mills, home to diverse faiths and peoples who have always lived together in peace and accepted our different views. Hate has absolutely no place here. It is up to all of us to bring the temperature down and look out for one another.
