Statement by Member of Parliament Iqra Khalid regarding the Ongoing Situation in Jerusalem and Sheikh Jarrah
I have been watching with horror as the aggression and violence continues to escalate in East Jerusalem, Sheikh Jarrah and the whole region. I strongly condemn the violence that has cost too many lives and injured countless more, including at the Al Aqsa Mosque. These actions in and around Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount are unacceptable, especially during the Holy month of Ramadan.
Over these past few days, I have heard many voices in Mississauga-Erin Mills raise their concerns for the people in Jerusalem and Sheikh Jarrah. This violence and blatant disregard for human life has killed innocent civilians, including children. It must stop. Local authorities must show leadership and fulfill their duty to protect all civilians and uphold international laws.
I do not believe that peace is a zero-sum game. All parties must act to end this violent conflict, including halting the continued forced evictions of Palestinian families. The global community must collaborate to help build a two-state solution for the sake of future generations.
The Government of Canada is gravely concerned by the escalating violence, settlements, and forced evictions of Palestinian families. These actions do not serve international law and take us further away from a two-state solution. Canada remains fully committed to the goal of a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace, including the creation of a Palestinian state living side by side in peace and security with Israel.
I have expressed my concerns publicly on multiple occasions over the last few days. As the Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Erin Mills, I will always stand against the violation of human rights around the world. I support a peaceful resolution that reinforces compassion and respect for, and among, all residents of Jerusalem and Sheikh Jarrah.
Sincerely,
Iqra Khalid
Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Erin Mills
