New Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit to Support 12 Million Canadians

MP Iqra Khalid joined Minister Rechie Valdez at Iqbal Foods to celebrate the announcement of the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB).

Beginning in July 2026, the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit will replace the GST/HST credit and provide increased support to millions of Canadians. As part of the transition, eligible individuals who received the GST/HST credit in January 2026 will receive an additional one-time top-up payment starting June 5, 2026. This payment will equal 50% of their GST/HST credit for the 2025–26 benefit year.

Under the new benefit, quarterly payments will increase by 25% over the next five years, while eligibility will expand to include an additional 500,000 individuals and families. Eligible Canadians may receive up to $950 annually for a single person and up to $1,890 for a family of four.

MP Khalid highlighted how the new benefit will help provide immediate relief on the rising cost of groceries and everyday essentials, while broader efforts continue to strengthen domestic food production, improve supply chains, and support a stronger and more affordable Canadian economy.

As the Member of Parliament for Mississauga—Erin Mills, MP Khalid remains committed to supporting measures that help make life more affordable for Canadians and families in the community.
