This weekend, I attended a charity fundraiser supporting Credit Valley Hospital and youth scholarships, organized by the Canadian Palestinian Professional Foundation in Our Lady Queen Croatia Park. During this event, I spoke with many of the residents in attendance.
While I posed for a photo with another dignitary, the sign in question was raised behind my back without my knowledge or consent. Its message does not accurately reflect my views. I have always stood against all forms of hate and discrimination. I absolutely take issue with diminishing the over 6 million innocent lives killed in the Holocaust and the generational trauma that our communities continue to experience today.
I immediately voiced my disappointment with the organizers that this incident took place and I have been speaking with affected residents in Erin Mills over the last few days.
My stance is clear and on the record: I condemn the violence and am sympathetic to the suffering of innocent victims, especially children. I am committed to a peaceful and just resolution in the form of a two-state solution.
It is unfortunate that the issue of innocents killed in the Middle East is being politicized, and I am deeply disappointed in this situation. It is not helpful to anyone, not to the cause of peace nor to the people working politically and on the ground in pursuit of peace.
As a Member of Parliament, I continue to listen to and advocate for the needs of my constituents.
Sincerely,
Iqra Khalid, MP
