MP Iqra Khalid Appointed as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue

September 18th, 2023, Ottawa – MP Iqra Khalid was sworn in this morning as the new Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue.

“I am honoured and humbled to serve as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Revenue,” said MP Khalid. “This is an exciting opportunity and I look forward to working with Hon. Marie-Claude Bibeau to improve federal services that impact residents, charities, and businesses across Canada. Thank you, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, for your trust.”

Iqra Khalid is the first woman of Pakistani descent to serve as a Parliamentary Secretary in the Government of Canada. She was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Mississauga—Erin Mills in 2015 and has been re-elected twice.

In her eight years as Member of Parliament, Ms. Khalid has served as Chair of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights; Vice Chair of the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy, and Ethics; a member of the International Human Rights Subcommittee on Foreign Affairs and the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians. She has also served on numerous parliamentary committees and associations, including three years as Chair of the Liberal women’s caucus.

MP Khalid emigrated from Pakistan to Canada with her family at a young age and grew up in the Erin Mills area of Mississauga, Ontario. Before entering politics, she worked at an immigration firm and for the City of Mississauga’s legal department. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Professional Writing and Criminology from York University and a Juris Doctor from Western Michigan University’s Cooley Law School.

As a Member of Parliament, Iqra Khalid is a champion for women’s issues, access to justice, and human rights in Canada and globally. In 2016, she brought forward a successful motion to investigate the Rohingya minority in Myanmar, leading Canada to recognize the genocide of the Rohingya. She also introduced a successful non-binding motion to condemn systemic racism and all forms of religious discrimination, including Islamophobia. She is a strong advocate against human trafficking and online hate, and her dedication to human rights earned her recognition as one of Chatelaine’s Women of the Year in 2017.

Ms. Khalid is actively engaged with people in her riding, where she holds regular town halls to gather ideas and keep people informed of the policies and programs that impact them. She works to inspire others to take an active role in building a better Canada, including as the founder and Chair of the Mississauga Erin Mills Women’s Council, which aims to amplify the voices of women in the local community.
